We diminish our self-esteem and our self-worth when we compare ourselves, our lives, our purpose to others. We all have our own individual uniqueness, our own reason for existing.
I was excited to see the article, Stop the Comparathon, in the May 2022 issue of First for Women. They give great advice on countering negative self talk. According to the article, there is always a trap and always a fix.
Here is an example from the article:
"Trap #1- She's thinner than me.
Fix #1-Take comfort in mirror meditation. Acknowledge your negative thoughts, which gives them less power".
Some other suggested fixes to different situations were:
1. Use your inner compass and let it guide you back to a happy place.
2. Savor the joy of the moment- If you don't feel happy, ask yourself what you need right now and think about a way to manifest it.
3. Shift your lens-When social media makes you feel bad because you are comparing your life to what you see on someone else's page. Pinpoint the feeling and then ask yourself what you really want/need. Discover you definition of real joy outside of social media.
Here is my spin:
Since we are not able to change facts, and there are probably positive attributes to most people and things on this planet, we should find a way to celebrate and acknowledge those things without letting it bring us down. So instead of comparing yourself or your life to others and leaving it there, compare if you would like but then also give the thought contrast so you pull out the beauty and uniqueness of both :-).
Compare: She's thinner than me - this maybe a true statement.
Contrast: State a positive compliment about yourself (also a true statement). Find one thing you like.... skin, hair, nails, complexion, etc.
Pull yourself UP, NEVER DOWN.
Counter every negative thought with a positive thought and soon it will be automatic!
